On your network, every device needs to have a unique IP address. So, for example, the router could be IP address 192.168.1.1, and your computer could be 192.168.1.2.

You always have to assign an IP address to a router. Most often (99% of the time) the router will be pre-programmed with a default address. DHCP is a communication protocol that allows the router to dynamically assign addresses to every network device that is connected to the network.

Generally, you program the router with an IP address, then program it with a range of IP addresses you use for DHCP. Then, the router assigns unique addresses to each piece of equipment on your network. Having two devices on your network with the same address is bad because the devices don't know who is being contacted, and both may try to respond--which really confuses things.

If you are setting up a home network, most often DHCP is plug and play.

Routers can be set to issue DHCP addresses. There are two forms of IP addressing : DHCP and static. Usually static IP address is assigned to a certain computer. That IP address only refers to that computer. DHCP on the other hand is dynamic. It is a leased address. Usually a router or a DHCP server issues those IP addresses. It is good if you don't want to mess with static IP addresses and have to remember who has what IP address. Servers, printers, switches, routers and such devices are usually set to static IP address. Client computers in fairly large organizations are set to obtain dynamic IP addresses.

DHCP stands for "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol".

In general each machine contains one ip. In a LAN if there are more than 100 machines connecting, you have to give ip address manually and you have to remember the same. This is called static ip.

To avoid this, DHCP will install in the sever, it will allocate one ip address to each and every machine. the ip address will change automatically. This is called dynamic ip

assume the ip address starts from 120.10.10.0 to 120.10.10.250.
It will allocate the ip address inbetween these.
