Any device that processes digital information must contain a processor at some level. Use your imagination.

To the relevant poster - why exactly is GPS the "best" example? What makes it a better example than say, an MP3 player, or a mobile phone?

Well, technically, yes. The CPU, or processor, is what does the "computing". It is the "computer", as it does the computing. But on its own, without a means to give it instructions or see the results of its calculations, you really don't have anything worth anything. So on a broader scale, a computer is a mechanism by which you can give the processor instructions (mouse, keyboard, and software), have it perform calculations, and store or spit out the results (via software and hardware) in some useful way. Without all three aspects, you've got nothing.

a computer has dozens of microcontrollers in it. anything with a remote has a microcontroller. new cars have at least one for each electronic system (stereo, ignition, fuel injection, lighting, instrument cluster, transmissions have several, on board diagnostics, ...). anything that connects to your TV, even your TV, your mouse, your keyboard with media or programmable buttons, cordless phones, cell phones, anything USB, anything FireWire.

microcontrollers are everywhere.

if you walk around your house counting and come up with fewer than about thirty, then you need to count again.
