Well, I work in a harsh environment, and I have problems with dells. Between the two I would recomend the HP, though if I were to choose between any laptops, I would first recomend a Toshiba, then an IBM thinkpad as far as reliability goes. It's more important to me that the machine works then works well though, so perhaps I'm the not the best person to ask.

I have supported Dell and HP both. I would say go with HP if you dont mind spending some extra. Dell is not bad, but the performance is not the same. If you wanna buy a laptop and are not stuck to Dell & HP, I would recommend IBM. Nothing beats it.

I would say HP for laptops. Although I have heard horror stories on both. I have a Dell and my wife has an HP. I love her HP, I find myself running off with it and leaving my Dell for her to use. We bought them both around the same time and we have had less problems out of the HP. Also, you just about always have to buy parts from dell to add to your comp. unless you are a guru. I don't know why, but some things aren't compatible when you are looking to upgrade. Go with the HP.
