They would get very bored swimming round a small bowl if they had things on their mind....
I sort of liked the story that each time they swim around and see you, they act pleased because they had forgotten you..

The myth in goldfish was they were limited to a 3 second memory... I'm a huge fan of the Discovery show, "Myth Busters" Jamie and Adam took on the goldfish myth and proved it to be false. They trained their fish to swim through an obsticle course and after the length of a week (I think... I could be wrong) Jamie's fish was able to go through the course with out the aid of the treats being used to coach it, proving that goldfish do not have a 3 second memory limitation.

Their memories are pretty long as far as I'm concerned. First of all they know when you are going to feed them everyday. That can be every 12 to 24 hours. If you have fish you know what I mean because they are ALWAYS excited about seeing you in front of the tank...especially if you appear there at the same time every day with food. Anybody who has fish knows how frantic they act. Also, when I went on vacation for a week, I put a fish feeder in. The feeder was good for 7 days and when I came back there was still some food left. However, as soon as they realized I was back they refused to eat it anymore. As a friend of mine pointed out, they remembered that they had a routine before and decided that they could just go back to it.

Actually, no, it's note true. Fish, even goldfish, have memories that can last weeks or longer.
You should watch Myth Busters on the Discovery Channel. They did an experiment testing a fish's memory. Well, they learned that that myth isn't true. They can and do memorize things.

That comes from the 3 second rule, which is the window you have to reinforce behaviour with a goldfish. My big goldie has a seperate feeding ring from my baby, so he won't steal their food. If he sneaks over there and nabs their dinner, I've got 3 seconds to scare him off with a finger in the water or he won't associate the threat with his action.
The same is true for reinforcing behaviour.

I somewhat do no longer purchase it. My 4 goldfish be conscious of me and my husband and greet us yet whilst somebody they don't be conscious of is in our living house they are skittish. additionally, my best Comet and Ryunkin are so linked to a minimum of one yet another that when I had to place my Comet in quarantine for a pair weeks they the two sulked approximately it till they have been placed lower back jointly. The inseparable duo! i could think of this means that they no longer in basic terms remember issues yet have thoughts as properly. i think of they are extremely clever.

You'd have to get a goldfish to live longer than 3 minutes to know for sure.... why? what did you do to your goldfish that you're hoping it has forgotten?

Sometimes I have a memory of less than that. I can forget things instantly, which makes a goldfish a memory champ compared to me.

It's not true at all. Goldfish can be trained to perform tricks, etc (as they proved on Mythbusters).
