Blood is red because of the iron content. Blood is bluish-purple while in the veins (returning to the heart). When oxidized in the lungs (through the pulmonary artery), it turns red. Red blood is distributed to the various body parts through arteries. Once the oxygen is used, the blood returns to it's bluish-purple hue for the trip back to the lungs.

mr moppet is right partially..it is because of the presence of a pigment called heamoglobin in ur red blood cells. the pigment contains ferrous or iron what is known as heam and the globins are protiens.iron is present in the form of a complex molecule and hence the color. every substance that has elements of the d-block in the periodic table, have color and the color in this pigment in blood happens to be red because when exposed to light it reflects that wavelength of light.

hey!!!who said that our blood is not green.......it is indeed green but inside our body.the blood inside our body is actually green.......but when u happen to cut ur finger or when something goes wrong resulting in bleeding, the green coloured blood immediately reacts with the atmospheric oxygen which turns it red.well!haven't u studied this in school?ohhhhhhh ok may be u are not a science student and hence this doubt!!!
