If your husband is going to contest it, then you better be prepared to pay because you'll need a lawyer. Don't get suckered into letting his lawyer handle everything because his lawyer will have his best interests at heart -- NOT YOURS. If you can convince your soon-to-be-ex not to contest it, some states have provisions for a no-fault divorce where you wouldn't need a lawyer (you just pay the fee to file and the court costs, which usually don't total more than a few hundred dollars at the most). If not, shop around for a good divorce lawyer and be prepared to pay $1,000.00 or more as a retainer.
