The brain is a highly efficient at pattern-recognition. It can often deduce an entire word from just a few letters or complete an oft-used phrase from the first few words. Humor is based on creating a pattern suggesting one outcome but substituting an unforeseen outcome that the brain finds interesting and stimulating. Pratfalls are the most basic examples of this.

Thank god somebody actually asked that? Had made my head go round for long..this question.
My view:
I could be taught. i.e. it may be social (some societies prefer sarcasm, while others prefer practical jokes and others think offensive is funny etc.)
On the other hand, why would an emotion like funny even come to existence? Perhaps, to avoid the stress. Stress is arguably detrimental to existence. It could lead to irrational behavior, depression etc. May be what we consider funny, is a way to counteract the adverse mental effects on our body. Its a medicine, and our brain has evolved to judge (both individually and more so socially) this emotion.

I think it has to do with our "filters".....or thats what I call them. We develope filter from life experience as to what is funny, sad, etc. And I think out brain learns from life experience what is funny. And since we all have different life experience it is clear why there are so many types of "funny" in the world.

It was simply the way we were raised. A boy could find fart jokes hilarious if he was raised that way, next to a boy who wasn't, and would find them less than amusing.

it depends upon how depleted it is. if I am fully energized and healthy, it takes complex things to amuse it. if I am weak or starved(after a long run)it doesn;t take a lot to amuse it, it is quite pathetic.

well, that is a good question...some people find humor in everything while others find humor in nothing...not sure how it works though, maybe humor is taught
