You don't !!

Plain and simple stay away from them (if possible) otherwise just think of them as a boil. You don't want it, you don't need it
but it's there. Until it goes away.

Don't argue with people like that, it's seems to give them a great
deal of satisfaction. If you don't fuel the fire it may just burn out.

I think it depends on how important they might be in your life. If they are someone you care about, you can try to discuss your issues with them. This isn't easy to do but if you want to maintain the relationship and it has become difficult for you, bringing it up could be the only answer. If they receive it in a negative way, then you have to decide if the relationship is worth it. For those who you barely know or that you have no interest in maintaining a relationship, then I would walk away. A difficult person is not a thing you want in your life and if you stick around, I feel you are giving them permission to behave the way they do. They may not even realize their behavior is seen as negative and would rather have it pointed out so they can behave differently. Sticking around someone whose behavior is bad, unless the relationship is very important to you, is just allowing someone to treat you poorly.

Depends on the environment that I am in and the degree of "difficult". However, most of the time I use jokes to politely point out that the person is a pain in the ***. If that doesn't work I stare blankly at him while he's talking as if I'm not understanding.
He usually walks away frustrated and I'm happy as a clam.

Be blunt and to the point with them...let them know that they are difficult but be light hearted about it...You would be surprised how humor can soften a person to you and they become less difficult.

I don't mind dealing with difficult people. Kill 'em with kindness. Makes them nervous and they usually shut up.
