Unfortunately, the only way to really know is to take him in to see a doctor. It is difficult to diagnose a disease without more information. Is it his associated with certain foods or exercising? etc etc. It could be degenertive disks, heart disease, pancreatitis or worse. Take him to a doctor.

First of all just his age alone I would be concerned. Just simply explain to him he could very well have an ulcer brought on by stress from running the restaurant; tell him if he would simply go to the doctors and possible have that confirmed that now a days they have good medicine that could aid in that department, but as far as the pain in the ribs and going up to his shoulder This is one thing I would definately have checked out for these pains can be affiliated with a number of heart conditions.

With all of those symptoms, it could be a lot of things. The symptoms may or may not even be related. Pain in the back and belly-could be kidneys, pancreas, gall bladder. Pain in the chest and shoulder-could be heart, arthritis, lungs.

As I've said...there are too many symptoms to be able to give an accurate diagnosis. Your best bet is to get him to his doctor, pronto. He should keep a diary of his symptoms so he can give his doctor the big picture.

Convince him!

If these symptoms are exacerbated by eating pale color stools, throwing up after eating. Could be the GALLBLADDER. Insist he go to the doctor. Just a simple exam and maybe blood work the doctor can lead him in the right direction. Maybe offer to help him out in the restaurant. Most people don't want to deal with their health when they worry about what will happen with their livelihood. LOL

I am a physician but I don't have the advantage of actual physical examination and the laboratory studies as may be needed to assist much. I am guessing but it seems that your grandfather might have gallstones, the pain would be right sided and would fit with the general symptoms.
People fear physicians as the 'doctors' are bearers of bad news..No one likes being poked and prodded, but I have the same feeling about dentists! You might be able to persuade him that a simple check-up and a few pills would do the trick...(If they are gallstones...it needs a bit more than pills) and let the physician show him the sonogram or X-ray to convince him that something needs done.

Too many possibilities.

Could be muscle from overuse, could be kidney or other internal organ, kidney stones, gall bladder, appendix.

He really needs to go to a doctor and just get lab tests to rule out internal organ problems.

If the doctor says he is "just getting old", check out www.hufa.org. I really don't think that low blood sugar or high insulin is your grandpa's problem, but if nothing else can be found, they might be.

Maybe he is going through puberty LOL JK

Maybe you should go to the doctor or call the doctor and tell him the symptoms and maybe he can give you some ideas and maybe you can convince you grandpa to go.

Hope you find the problem.

I won;t even begin to try to tell you what these symptoms could represent. Because they are symptoms of many thing heart attack, stroke gestational disorders etc. I suggest you try looking these up at www.webmd.com. And work real hard on your grandpa to get him to go to the doctor especially since they are getting worse.

This sounds alarm bells for me...

Please note that no one can diagnose over the internet. However, this seems to me that it could be a condition affecting one of his internal organs, in which case he needs to see a doctor. It could be a muscle pull as well... but he really should get to a doctor. best wishes :)
