Materazzi, 32, told Gazetta dello Sport: 'I held his shirt for a few seconds only, then he turned to me and talked to me, jeering.

'He looked at me with a huge arrogance and said, "If you really want my shirt I'll give it to you afterwards". I replied with an insult, that's true.'

Materazzi has not elaborated on what he did say, but one report suggested he responded with: 'I'd rather take the shirt off your wife'.

He has denied, however, some of the more vile insults referring to his wife or sister or calling him a terrorist.

'It was one of those insults you're told dozens of times and that you often let fall on a pitch,' Materazzi said.

'I did not call him a terrorist. I am not a cultured person and I don't even know what an Islamist terrorist is.'

He added: 'For me the mother is sacred, you know that.'

The incident marked an unsavoury end to Zidane's career, especially as France went on to lose the match on penalties. The 34-year-old had said he would retire.

That is awesome. So much at stake, you can hardly blame these athletes for getting cocky. Perhaps in the ghetto roots of true hooligan football headbutts are commonplace. At the highest level, with 1 billion viewers, your actions speak louder than words. Regardless of whatever insults are said, words are just words. It's just not a responsible move in any modern sporting event except for the WWF to physically attack another player. In the NBA, players were ejected and fined huge amounts for attacking fans for throwing cups at them. I agree with the referees judgement. There are no penalties for verbal insults. There are penalties for assaults. That's the way it works and it's denegrading to his own character (ZZ) if he cannot seem to remember this. France had a star, but Italy was the better team.
