As opposed to a traditional, or "public franchise" situation, a "private franchise" is an arrangement by which a private party is authorized by a supplier or suppliers of a product/service, to buy the item wholesale and to self retail. He has the freedom of an independent contractor.

A public franchise would be like a Subway sandwich shop owner, and a private franchise would be like a Mary Kay cosmetics salesperson.
