Giving birth is considerably less painful for females of other mammal species - it is humans who are different. Human females experience considerable pain because we had the poor sense, about a million years ago, to spend most of our existence walking upright. Being a very feeble ape, this was actually better for our survival. But it distorted the spinal column, altered the orientation of the hips and caused muscle to accumulate in places detrimental to easy birth.

Human offspring are also endowed with a much larger brain than other species, giving them an exceptionally large head to get out of the birth canal first. (For the same reason, human children have to be born much earlier than they are ready, and must continue the development of their bodies for another nine or ten months, making them completely dependent on their mother for everything. Haven't you ever wondered why cows can give birth to young that can walk straight away, but we can't?)

So the reason bears (your pet cat, or mice, or anything except your mother) don't feel pain while giving birth is because birth isn't meant to be painful. And you can blame human evolution for that one.

They don't necessarily feel the pain because of the hibernation. Its such a deep sleep thats programmed into their body that not even the birth of a cub will pull them out of it. .....Wish it were that way for us women! I'd love to wake up and realize that my baby was already born and I missed all that labor mess. ; )

There have been times when I have birthed massive bowel movements in my sleep. Although it is painful, I sleep right through it.
