Ideally it would be after your annual evaluation period (assuming your company has one - most big companies do). Since you've only been there one year, I don't think it would be appropriate to ask at anytime outside of the annual evaluation period. Also, an annual evaluation will give "proof" of your good performance, and can only help your case.

Also, consider whether other people are getting raises at your company. If not, asking for a raise may not help you at all - it might just be better to find somewhere else to work.

This should have been a question asked in your initial interviews. Raises mostly are subject to evaluations or performance reviews or at normal intervals. When initially speaking to an employee about their current evaluations, I have observed their asking for a raise. The right opportunity for asking for a raise is during a good performance review. If reviews or evaluations are not common practice, then making an appointment with your immediate supervisor or boss would be the next step. Most companies have an open door policy. When talking to your supervisor proves to be unfruitful, exercise your right to an open door policy. What ever choice you make be sure to continue working hard. Be persistent and a raise will surely follow.

If you are supposed to have anual reviews and your date has passed, then let your boss know that your date has passed (in a nice way).
If you don't have an annual review, then don't expect to get a raise every year at your anniversary date. Wait untill you do something above the average and then ask for a raise. They have to see that your going above and beyond.
Good Luck
