You can get an entire head kit, which includes all the needed gaskets like intake, exhaust etc. for about £80. You also need new head bolts !!!!! DON'T REUSE THE OLD ONCE AS THEY ARE STRECH BOLTS !!! Set of bolts is around £40. AND THEY DON'T NEED TO BE RE-TEIGHTEND!!! Only on older cars that was the case. Its pretty straight forward if you have some experience with fixing cars. I'd say about 4 hours when its your first time. A free garage will probably charge you around £600 for the entire jobby including the parts.

Get the gasket your self it should only cost about €30, get some local small garage to do it, shouldn't be much more than an hours labour, €100 should cover the whole job including parts. Stay well clear of main dealers with a 98 car.

My god . Shocked at the answers you are getting. Replacing a head gasket is not a home repair unless you are experienced in doing them and I would also love to meet a mechanic that could do it in an hour. He would be the most successful mechanic in the world.
anyway, getting back to your question, just take it to a few garages and get some quotes

IF you do it yourself, use a torque wrench on the cylinder head bolts, to the correct torque (see manual), also you need to tighten them in the correct order for your car.
Check the bolts again after 200 miles as the gasket will probably compress slightly.
garage - probably 4 hours labour, say 200 pounds, 300 US, plus taxes. You don't need to use a franchised dealer.
