I would like to add low maintenance trees and bushes

I think I would start with a path up to your home. There are many low maintenance plants that will return every year. Hostas, ferns, coral bells, sedum and gaillardia, to name a few. These are easy to take care of and need very little maintenance. They would look great on either side of a path up to your home.
If you like flowering shrubs you can try Rhododendron and Azalea. I bought sick looking, clearanced plants like these at the end of last years planting season and they have doubled in size.
There are also many flowering trees that you can spread throughout your yard. Flowering Plums are one of my favorite. They have a burgundy leaf with a small bloom in the spring. They don't produce any fruit so you don't have to worry about the mess on your ground.
You are lucky to have such an unusual shaped yard. The possibilities are endless. If you want to put a boarder around your yard you can try a Flowering Sharon. Its a great shrub, low maintenance and it makes an interesting boarder.
Have you ever gone to Home and Garden's website? You can draw up a virtual plan of you yard and add plants and color. Sometimes its nice to have a plan on paper so you can dream up a plan and have it on paper.
Good luck and don't be afraid to get your hands dirty!

A triangle lot sounds interesting! Perhaps it you put smaller plants up front and then as it goes closer to your house the plants get bigger, that would look kind of cool!
