There are cleaners you can buy that claim to remove the build up, but in my experience, they don't work. I ended up chucking out my old iron.

By the way, the build up doesn't come from using steam. It comes from using the wrong heat setting, which actually melts a little bit of the fibre of the material onto the iron.

And now that I've found a wonderful iron... my best advice... ditch it. Don't get suckered into buying another non-stick surface. Buy one with a uncoated, shiny metal surface. They don't seem to get any buildup and even if it does, you can just scrub it down with a scouring pad (which of course, you would never dream of doing with a non-stick surface!)

I have used toothpaste to clean it off, just be sure not to block up the steam holes, and turn the iron down when you use it, it might take a little longer, but you won't be ruining your clothes

Fabric stores carry soleplate cleaners for irons. They cost a couple of bucks and work great. When you finish ironing, wet a paper towel with vinegar and iron it. This removes the sediment off the soleplate of your iron between cleanings. To the lady with the metal slides.... :-) I remember doing that!

When I was a child we used waxed paper with salt on it.

While the iron is warm, spread waxed paper on some newspaper on top of the ironing board, sprinkle salt on it and iron. sounds bazaar but it worked for us.

Psssst, we used the waxed paper to slick up the sliding boards outside too. Of course they were made of metal then.

There's a product called iron clean. It comes in a pack of two small tubes. It's awesome. I use it all the time. You should be able to find it at Target and Walmart and Kmart.

Iron a piece of wax paper. Be careful not to have the setting too high.
