Any word that contains "phagus" relates to things being eaten, or contained. In this case sarco, or body. So it means something that has "eaten" or contained a body. It is a tomb.
If you learn a few latin words it can be the key to understanding lots of other words you haven't come across before. Many dictionaries tell you where words come from, its good fun to follow this up, like clues in a detective book!

In ancient egypt they used to cut out organs, brain heart and liver certainly, and place them in jars called sarcophagus dedicated to various gods. These would go with the body in the pyramid or tomb, and the jars would have god head shaped lids, did you know that they used to remove the brain via a nostril, with a hook!!

Conventionally a stone external coffin-like case for remains. Most commonly refers to Egyptian burials, though other examples are found throughout the ancient world.
Similar to the others I know - but I said it really, really, boringly. Bring on a lecture!

It is the container the Egyptians used to hold their mummies (other cultures used them later). The Greeks named them this, for some odd reason, since the word literally means "body eater" in Greek.

Isn't that the weird elephant-like creature on Sesame Street? I think he only relates to Big Bird.
