This is a difficult one for me. I'm British/English/from the North East have lived in London all of my adult life and wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Looking back through history I am deeply ashamed of and even enraged by many many things that have been done in the name of "Britain" (e.g. I sympathise with our Irish contributor above). At their best, Brits can be tolerant - "live and let live" - and we have a great sense of humour, often used to get by when things are grim.

I'm proud of my nationality. I am English & we live in Britain, or the United Kingdom. If you are not born of English parents then how can you ever be British? You would still be Italian!!!!!!!

There are a lot of legitimate things to be proud of, like your family or your community. National pride can get out of hand, and nationalism is usually perpetrated by national leaders as a tool to control you.

As a Marxist, I don't subscribe to the concept of national identity. There's no such place as "Britain". It's just an idea, and a bad one at that.
