when gapping a spark plug with a round gauge, do you only go to the line or do you put the # you need in the middle

It truly doesn't matter. Spark plug gap is not absolutely critical. Just get it close. I tend to eyeball all of my gaps. The only adjustments I make are on my race cars. Good luck.

you put the one you need through the gap between the node and the base. It should slide through with a little bit of drag

Measure close to the number, don't worry very slight difference in gap won't have any effect.

the best gap for any plug is one that is square ( or 90 degrees from electrode )- regardless of brand or specs.

I would put the line for the number in the middle, that's what i always do.
