2)On the first year a company started the company made $100,000,000.00. This company's yearly profit increases with the same percentage. In two years the company has $121,000,000. What is the percentage of the increase in the company's yearly profit each year?

1. SQRT(-1) is given the symbol i by mathematicians. It is "j" by electrical engineers to avoid confusion with i (the symbol for current) as in the equation v=i*r which means voltage (in volts) equals current (in amperes or amps) times resistance (in ohms).
2. F = P(1+i)^n
F is future worth, P is present worth, i is the interest rate, n is the number of years.
so
121,000,000=100,000,000(1+i)^2
1.21=(1+i)^2
1.1=1+i
thus i=0.1 or 10%

1) i, the imaginary number, by definition (no work needed)
2) I'm not positive about what you mean exactly, but I'll assume what's most likely, that the company made $100M in Year 1, made $121M in Year 3, and you need to find out what the yearly increase in profit (percentage-wise) is. First it's helpful to find out what the amount in Year 3 is as a percentage of the Year 1 profit... 121M/100M = 121%. Then you can just take the square root of 121% to get the amount is in Year 2 as a percent of Year 1(because the inverse of a square root is squaring a number, which you would do to go from one year to two). The square root of 121% is 110%. Hence, the company made 110% time 100M in year 2, or 110M. You can also verify that 121M (Year 3 profit) is 110% of 110M (Year 2 profit). Hence, the rate of increase is 110% - 100% = 10%.

1) i or j whichever you prefer sqrt(-1) is not found on the number line or in the set of real numbers but its in the imaginary numbers.
2) 121,000,000-100,000,000=21,000,000 in 2 years
10,500,000 in a year 10,500,000/100,000,000 = 105/1000 = 10.5% annually or each year
