I would like to know what you use wikis for, what other people use wikis for now and what wikis could be used for in the future (by private persons, by companies, etc.).

@raci_tracey: Well, that is if you employ an open wiki... But there are ways in which you can protect your wiki from abuse. So, I don't think that you can generalize this! Waiting for better answers than that...

The primary use is creating a knowledge base, whether that's a general encyclopedia like Wikipedia, or something a company uses internally to train its own staff.

All sorts of collaborative writing can be done on wikis, and they can be used for this in education by having groups of students work together on wikis.

Wikis are also useful for project planning since everyone can contribute to the draft plans and track changes in proposals.

See http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Uses_of_a_wiki for some other examples.

Right now we use it at my company for code documentation. We also intend to use it for our design teams to document what they want from the tech team.

Absolutely nothing. Anyone can post, they are not subject to a quality review for accuracy, you are really taking your chances when you rely on them.
