During pregnancy, your body stores fat for the breastfeeding that will follow. When you are nursing, you are *burning* that fat. If you continue to eat about the same after weaning as while you were nursing, you will probably put on weight. But there is no reason for you to keep eating the extra calories for breastfeeding.
What frequently does happen, though, is that *some* women feel that if they are breastfeeding, they can eat as much as they want and not worry. So, while they may need 300 extra calories (experts estimate it takes 300-500 calories a day) to produce milk, they are eating 600 or even 700 calories extra. (And one person above wrote that you need to eat 1500 calories--that's enough for a whole adult!!--while nursing!! Imagine how much weight you'll gain while nursing then!!) These calories will be saved in fat cells. Then, if you stop nursing and stop eating those extra calories, you will start to lose weight.

I breastfed for 9 months and didn't really lose any weight although I didn't gain any despite eating like a pig and being constantly hungry. When I stopped, my weight started to plummet despite the fact that I wasn't really trying hard to lose weight. I dropped about two dress sizes in under two months. Some of that was down to my breasts returning to normal. My doctor had already told me that some women lose weight whilst breast feeding and some when they stop. I seem to be in the latter category and perhaps its genetic - exactly the same thing happened to my sister. I'm quite good about only eating when I'm hungry and not snacking too much between meals. My appetite went down massively when I stopped breastfeeding so perhaps that's why I lost so much? Good luck however it turns out. I miss breastfeeding my little girl, but it was nice to have my body to myself again!

If you are going to be eating the same amount then yes you will put on weight because you are no longer burning that 1500 calories a day breastfeeding. I've never heard of your body storing fat while breastfeeding, I've only heard that your body burns 1500 calories a day. I didn't gain weight after breastfeeding. I did however consciously not eat as much. I wasn't as hungry or thirsty.

It depends on a lot of different things; how much milk you're still producing, your diet and exercise, your body's adjustment to not breastfeeding, etc. Not all women react the same way. Your body make take more time to realize that the milk doesn't need to produce anymore. Your weight could fluctuate during this transition period, but it's possible you could actually lose weight. It's just a wait and see game, really.

You will need to cut your caloric intake based on the fact that you're no longer producing milk. I am nursing an 11 month old about 20 times a day (oink oink LOL) and I eat like I have tapeworms. I have about 10 extra pounds that I would like to lose but the way I eat right now I would be at least 80 pounds overweight if I weren't nursing. She went on a 10 day nursing strike last month and my appetite went away and I started losing weight. I think your friend is right, you do store a little extra while nursing, but isn't it worth it?! Congrats on giving your little one such a great start in life, I'm sure you will lose a little extra fat now as your good mommy award.

While you're breasfeeding you burn off a lot of calories so that means that when you stop, you will likely gain weight if you don't change your eating habit. You can't eat the same way you did when you're breastfeeding after you've stopped. So either eat less calories, or eat the same way but exercises so you don't gain weight.

You actually burn about 500 calories MORE per day while you're breast feeding. If you keep eating the way you did while breast feeding now, you'll most likely gain weight. Since you don't have that extra 500 calories burning each day. So to maintain your weight, you'll either need to cut out some food, or add in some extra exercise. Good luck!

You have to eat a good diet when breastfeeding as you're using up your body's resources. As any parent with a young child, I think you'll be using the same amount of energy looking after your baby when you've stopped breastfeeding as you did before - if not more, as your baby is growing and changing in its demands. Try to eat just a good balanced diet and good luck!

When I stopped breastfeeding, I gained weight. Breastfeeding burns up extra calories. Start eating less food and you will be fine.
