Personally, I use AVG, IF I am using a Windows system. Of all the ones I have used, it takes up the least amount of resources. Now if you have a super-fast system, any of the others will do well for you, depending on what you use your computer for. I solved the entire problem of virii and spyware and I don't use Windows anymore. I have since moved on to Linux (Ubuntu, SuSE, Debian, Gentoo, etc..)

Now the purpose of a firewall is to keep unwanted (and potentially harmful) internet traffic from accessing your computer. I use a firewall suite called IPCop and I have it installed on an old PC I do not use anymore. Its entire purpose is to filter out my broadband connection and olny allow what I want through. If you want to run a firewall on your computer just keep in mind that nothing you run as software along with Windows will be 100% secure. There will always be a security hole somewhere. I just prevent people from getting to my system entirely by using another.

Some firewalls I have used:
Sygate (now purchased by Norton)
ZoneAlarm (Not too bad, but noisy in my opinion)
BlackIce (used once a long time ago, didn't like)
Kaspersky (I use their AntiVirus for some of my windows systems and it works well)
PC-Cillin
And many more.

Feel free to ask me personally for any other virus/firewall stuff you need.

I don't know which works best, but I know a lot of people who have had issues with norton(Symantec) and their email.

Occasionally they can't get their email and if they turn it off then their email works again.

A firewall is a piece of software (or sometimes hardware) that sits between your computer and the net and attempts to stop bad things happening to you.

Personally I run the free version of the AVG antivirus product.

Avast and Eset I saw as the best 2. (though you can't have both on your comp at once.) They both have a good memory profile and can scan http websites to ensure your not downloading viruses to your computer before you go to the website. eset and avast (and computer associates even which my bro uses, which uses little memory too), you can just install and not have to run a scan at all cuz it will monitor in the background and will do it's own scans in the background so you never have to remember to scan you computer.

McAffee is the best, and AVG is the second best. Norton is a virus itself. Anything written by Symantec is worse than actually having a virus, I swear. The purpose of a firewall is to keep little kids who are on their parents' computers from gaining access to your computer.
