For some mad reason , nestle stopped making the smarties with the plastic lids with letters on, you go to your local corner shop and you will find them in a cardboard tub with a flip up cardbaord lid .... i so perfered the plastic tops.

I don't know. Why do the lids on smarties have letters on them?

Is this a joke?

Smarties tubes had other uses. You can be right or left eyed, just you can be right or left handed. To test, give your child a smartie tube, with the ends taken out and ask them to look through it. They will automatically select the eye they favour. It is said that righthanded, but lefteyed cricketers make the best batsmen!

Apparently it is for educational purposes for children.

smarties are after all sweets that are really meant for young children, the same as jelly tots and the like.

Not only do they have letters on them but you will notice that they are different colours too.
presumably so the parent can teach their child a colour and a letter every time they buy a tube of smarties.

hope that helps
