1) define "success" in your own terms - not in terms of what others call it. Example: I don't need a big house, car, boat, trophy wife etc. You may want that. Me, I want freedom - time is the most precious commodity.
2) understand that the conventional wisdom is frequently wrong. Seek out alternative solutions and paths - and pay attention to the ideas and people that others criticize. Sure there are crackpots and scam artists, but they're easy to spot with a little due diligence. But it's the ideas from left field that you can really use to make a big break. Sort of the same idea as that old cliche about the "definition of insanity: doing the same thing but expecting different results" well... what results do you expect if you do what everyone else is doing?
3) constant, proactive study - in your specific field, and in general of business and succcess and successful people and how they think. Example: I told my wife that for Christmas I wanted all the Apprentice episodes on DVD. I watched the entire set over the week between Christmas and New Year's. Why? To study Trump, see how he thinks.
4) specifically studying selling, sales, marketing, what works, what doesn't, the psychology involved etc. If you know how to sell, success comes much faster. Note: if you watched the Apprentice, what was Trump's ONLY measure of success in the challenges? Sales.
Degree... it can help, it's an asset, you should look for ways to utilize it. If you don't have one yet, look at it as an investment, compare it to alternative uses of your time and money. Frankly if you're starting a business, a Harvard MBA will probably hinder more than help. The key in starting and succeeding in a business is "grit" or "determination" and ACTION.
Passion is critical - it has to be driven from your success dreams because the sacrifices will be large, and you have to be able to willlingly make those trade-offs.

Its really pretty simple. You must always work yourself even if you have employees, be honest to everyone, and always keep it under control by not saying yes to everything without thinking first.
