Samurai 7, the animation kicks and is a mix of past and future, much like Last Exile. If you haven't seen it, watch Eureka 7, it's a cute show with a very surprising story. Cyborg 009 has a great storyline--futuristic. Argento Soma is a very underrated anime and has poor animation, but the storyline is deep, like NGE, having a max of 26 eps. Though not really animes, I suggest watching AEon Flux (the animation, not the inaccurate cinema remake) and Xmen Evolution on YouTube or some other site. Adult Swim is getting BLEACH on 9/8, but I suggest reading the manga or watching the anime online--it's REALLY funny. Hellsing may be too dark for your tastes, but it is clever and atypical, it's not that expensive either, since the manga consists of 7 volumes. If you like shoujo, you may like Angel Sanctuary. It is a bit, well, extreme, but it's not draggy or corny like typical shoujo.

Gunslinger Girl-
It has got to be the best anime ever made.
Child assasins with phenomenal animation and an outrageous soundtrack.
IF you get a chance, you should check it out. It's available on DVD from FUNimation.

Last Exile is good, but the series isn't long. i just started watching Bleach and that show is awsome. Ouran High School Host Club is the best, but watch out for the twinest and only one part of an episode is yuri.

nobody said Neon Genesis Evangelion.. it's valued as the greatest and most complex anime/manga in history.. And yes I agree with everything that's Hayao Miyazaki, If you like fruit's basket you should see Kare Kano (Kareshi Kanojo no Jijyo "His and her circumstances") wich is about a trillion times better

Depends on your taste of anime. Ruroni Kenshin and Samurai X are way cool, along with the Dragon Ball Z series. I thought Wing Gundam series was a blast as well. Gunslinger Girl is pretty cool.

the bummer side is that it ends after the first season because the manga writer couldn't finish the books, he died.
