When I put any disk into it, the disk spins, the orange light goes on for about a minute then it goes off but nothing happens.

And just now when I checked, the drives have changed names.

My cd and dvd drives used to be E: and F:
But now they are D: and E:

Recently when I rebooted, the pc asked me to select from an empty drop down list which drive was my dvd burner.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

1. Probably the Laser is burned out.

2. If you'll get the liveCD and boot from it, it will let you try to run the reader, and, if it does read the LiveCDrom, then it is the drivers in your 7 year old Microsoft XP virus magnet. Microsoft products tend to drop your drivers and forget equipment from one boot-up to the next...

http://pclinuxos.com has the free Live CDrom to download.
And, there are forums and help files galore!

in case you probably did not use to a lot alcohol you ought to attempt a very specialist cleansing kit (in a large number of situations an audio CD with little brushes on it). If that would not paintings it will be a software difficulty so if a threat attempt it on yet another computer or do a sparkling set up of your OS (if the computing device can see the set up disk this may fix it). If that would not paintings you are able to also attempt updating the firmware on your gadget (in a large number of situations you receives distinctive advice about this on the manufacturers internet website). To find out if your drive has gone bad, do this: put in a CD or DVD disk, then open "My Computer". Once the disk has been in the drive for ~30 seconds, right-click the drive, and select "Explore". If it "shows" you what's on the disk, then someone has turned off autoplay on that drive.

To "get" autoplay back, right-click the drive again, and this time select "Properties", and then click on the "Autoplay" tab at the top. You'll then have to tell Windows to autoplay each type of disk, and then reboot.

Go to device manager by right click on MY COMPUTER and select properties, then hardware tab. Click on device manager, and you'll see all the hardwares hook up to the system. click on the plus ( + ) sign before DVD/CD-ROM drives, right click on the drive and select uninstall. Don't worry about the warning message. Do the same for both drives, then reboot the computer. Good luck.
