The book was about a prince who set out on a journey. He encounters 3 men: one who can turn into a snake, one who can turn into an elephant and one who can turn into fire. The three travelers help the prince pass a series of challenges. I would love to be able to find this book from my past. Thanks for the help.

I'm afraid it is not The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery. I remember details of the protaganist rescuing a snake caught in a tree (which turns out to be a man), the two other people (one who can turn into an elephant and one who can turn into fire). They later help him past 3 tests by a king whose daughter this man wants to marry. I remember the elephant sucks up vats full of wine and the fire-man "consuming" an entire room of food (by fire). Hope that sparks something in someone's mind.

After reviewing The Remarkable Journey of Prince Jen, by Lloyd Alexander, it is very similar (the prince, the journey, companions) but does not have the absolute elements of the companions who change into snake, elephant, and fire to help him past the tests.

I remember the book! I can't remember the title either. Maybe someone out there will know. I'll be watching, too.

I don't know it--but it sounds like an Indian (from India) Tale. Go to your public library and talk to the children's librarian--she might remember.
