Definitely drinking the water to flush it through..but make sure you are having pain killers too...many people do not understand what you are going through..it is like the equivalent to giving birth as a woman!!!
Analgesia and perhaps an antispasmodic..not sure where you are from but here in Australia we give Buscopan (antispasmodic) and some analgesia for the pain....lots of IV fluid aswell as encouraging drinking alot of fluid too.
As a previous person said, strain the urine to catch the stone..you WILL know when it has passed!!!
Many a time I have gone to check out some morphine for the patients' excruciating pain and they say to me.."oh, I think I don't need that now, look in the bottle there..I passed the stone!!" The pain literaly goes away!!!
If it all gets too bad go to the Emergency Room!!!

Fortunately, surgery is not usually necessary. Most kidney stones can pass through the urinary system with plenty of water (2 to 3 quarts a day) to help move the stone along. Often, you can stay home during this process, drinking fluids and taking pain medication as needed. The doctor usually asks you to save the passed stone(s) for testing. (You can catch it in a cup or tea strainer used only for this purpose.)

If the water doesn't work there is a machine called a lithotripter. A water bath where they produce ultrasound, and that breaks the stone. Hope your's is 'just' a stone. Mine is cancer. Feels just like a stone, but will kill me. They say by the time you can feel the pain, it's too late.

That is one of the best, you could go in and see the doctor, and they can run some IV fluids in rather quickly. Are you sure it is a kidney stone?

painfull, he. it depends on the diametre of the stone and the amount of liquid passing through your urinary system. anyway, you have it. so, the way it comes out isn't important (operation, naturally or by laser).
the important thing is to prevent it comes back.
my urologue said i have to drink at least 3 liters a day otherwise it will come back for sure.
