The life of a car battery is usually rated by months. The more you pay, the longer it lasts. They also make life time batteries. They don't last forever but they will replace it if it goes bad (most of the time).
If you plan on owning your car for a long time, get a good battery. If it's a pile of junk you don't plan on keeping for long, buy something cheap.

if you have the time to look after it, a battery can last indefinitely, certainly 15-20 years. EDTA pills can be used to clean up the plates. It is also possible to clean out the battery by carefully removing the acid, washing out the deposits from the battery with water and refilling it. This is not the whole process so check the web before trying it!!

depending on what brand you get, and if you live in a cold weather state, it's shorter, 4-5 years. if not in use in winter take it out and store it in the house, or start occasionally so the alternator can recharge it. if your having problems with the battery dying a lot, it is most likely you have a bad alternator.

depend on the battery. If you have standard lead-acid battery and keep the water level (DISTILLED WATER) filled. It can last you 5+ years easily. If you dont take of it properly...who knows?
