Last night, I was on the internet, and all of a sudden, the computer restarted on its own. I don't think it was a power flick, because the TV was on as well, and it didn't even flicker, plus the VCR stayed running as well. I also got the screen on startup saying the computer did not shut down correctly and is scanning the hard disk for errors. I think it may be a hardware issue, as something of this nature has happened before, but not in a while. Any help?

Viruses can't cause a computer to restart. If it's a boot sector virus, it can cause the computer NOT to start, but that's about all. Restarts are caused by one of a few problems: overheating (cpu or motherboard chipset) <----most likely your problem, power supply going bad, or a bad stick of memory. Download this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311 and it will tell you your cpu and chipset temperatures.

If your cpu temp. is over 50°C at idle, or your chipset temp. is over 45°C at idle, then you're overheating. Most likely, all you'll need to do to fix the problem is buy a can of compressed air from Wal-Mart (or wherever), and spend most of your time getting the dust out of the processor's heatsink and fan. If it's one of the other two, you'll more than likely have to take it to a shop, to have it fixed.

Most likely there is nothing seriously wrong with your computer. This has happened to me before, and my power supply wasn't bad, my CPU wasn't overheating and my RAM was fine. Windows had an error. I would really help to know what you were doing at the time, and if you can duplicate the problem.

If the problem happens again, make sure to run a full system scan for virus' and spyware/adware/malware. run system file checker. (click start> run...>type "cmd" click ok>type "sfc /scannow" press enter. Make sure your windows cd is in the drive)

If you were doing something and you can duplicate the problem, you have identified where the problem lies, and can search for a speficial resolution with the symptoms in any search engine. For example, "downloading firefox system reboot"

If you have this problem continually from this point on, after running sfc /scannow. Try a new power supply (if that doesn't fix it return the power supply) if that doesn't work. You will most likely have a fan that is out, or a ram slot that is bad. Try rearranging the RAM in the RAM slots on the motherboard.

It appears like a heating difficulty for both your CPU or pictures card if it in basic terms takes position once you play video games. Take a can of air to ascertain if you're able to remove any airborne dirt and dust. you are able to also flow your skill furnish cables round and zip tie them for extra constructive ventilation. Use a software like HWMonitor to envision your idle temperatures. in the experience that they at or above 50 tiers Celsius for both the CPU or pictures card even as your computer is in simple terms sitting there doing no longer something, then there's a difficulty.

Restarts in summer are due more oftenly, many due to overheat. Get a clean n dry brush, n sweep the dust specially from cpu.
Check up all the fans too, or/n buy another cpu cooler (prolly you got an Amd).
You may check also BIOS S.M.A.R.T. feature, (if is not checked already) to be pretty sure your hd is working fine.

if you didnt get the BSOD indicating a page fault or an memory access error then you know its not a general protection fault.A random restart is usually a hardware issue.Probably bad ram.Try a benchmarking program like SiSoft and run all the pertinent tests

That could be Windows error or problems of power supply. Maybe you recently added new hardware and it need more power. Set power settings on Bios. If that will not help I suggest to reinstall Windows.

Problems with SMPS or on the circuit Mother board would be the reason for that! But, not a big problem! First check with your cords (mainly the moniter- CPU power cord and data cable) and then if the problem is there, check your SMPS with a hardware engineer.

Were you downloading something in the background and it finished installing?

Sometimes after installing software, the PC will just reboot itself.

Other than that, it does sound like a hardware issue, not sure which though.
