Smith's conversation is full of references to his upbringing in Philadelphia as one of Caroline and Willard Smith Sr.'s four children, and their oldest son. His mother pushed him to get a good education. Despite good SAT scores, Smith says his grades weren't good enough to get him into MIT, where he'd planned to study computer engineering. But his mother got him accepted in a preparatory program for the school. He stunned his parents when he told them he wanted to skip college.
