Knowing the properties of matter allows us to manipulate it for our benefit. Knowing that dry wood makes a good fuel for a fire allows us to keep warm in the winter and cook our food to prevent some diseases. And so on.

i think the number of electron is the most important properties.

well it helps if we know whether to expect a solid, liquid or gas at the end of a reaction because one doesn't like nasty suprises
