It depends on how you define "in your hand": 5-5-5-J and turnup card 5 gives you 29 when Jack is the same suit as the turnup, but if you are the dealer and you count the turnup as part of your hand, then 5-5-5-5 with J on the turnup scores 30 (since you get 2 for "his heels" as you get the Jack on turnup).
Both these go like this: pairs of 5s: 6 pairs for 12 points
5+5+5 making 15 points: 4 ways for 8 points
5+J making 15 points: 4 ways for 8 points
Jack: either 1 for "his knobs" or 2 for "his heels" making 29 or 30.

The best hand not involving all fives is:
4-4-5-6-6 scoring 4 for two pairs, 12 for 4-5-6 in four ways, 8 for fifteens (4-5-6 four ways) for a total of 24.

The best hand not involving ANY fives is likewise 24:
7-7-8-8-9 scoring: 4 for two pairs; 12 for run of 7-8-9 four times, 8 for fifteens (7+8) four ways for a total of 24.

The answer is 29, three fives and a jack in your hand, fourth five as up card in same suit as jack. 15's for 16, four 5's for 12, and the "right" jack for 1

the highest I have ever had was 28.. my Jack wasn't the right suit! Some people play for a lifetime and never even get a 28 hand so I feel lucky enough :)
