October is the tenth month of the year in the Gregorian Calendar and one of seven Gregorian months with the length of 31 days.

October begins in western tropical astrology with the sun in the sign of Libra and ends in the sign of Scorpio. Astronomically speaking, the sun actually begins in the constellation of Virgo and ends in the constellation of Libra.

In Latin, octo means "eight". The origin of the name may also be attributed to Vedic culture; Octa refers to "eight" and Ambar means "sky". "Oct-Ambar" referred to the eighth sky or month in the Vedic culture. October was also the eighth month in the Roman calendar until a monthless winter period (summer in the southern hemisphere) was divided between January and February.

Of course October comes from the Latin root "octo" meaning 8, which is why an 8-sided polygon is called an octagon. In the ancient Roman Empire, their calendar had only 10 months. Some of the months were after Roman gods like March (Mars) June (Juno). October was the eighth month, followed by November (Latin for 9th) and December (10th). 2 months were later added: One in honor of Julius Cesar- July - and one for Augustus Cesar - August. So now we have a 12-month year.

October was indeed the eighth month in a ten month year. That was before Julius (July) and Augustus (August) Caesar werehonoured with the names of the two extra months that were added due to the fact that it had been realised that years were being measured short.
