Decanting is preferable when the solid you are trying to isolate is enough higher in density than the liquid and is of large enough size particles so it will settle in the time you have available. The advantage is that the solid remains on a smooth surface (the container) rather than being tangled up in filter paper, so it's easier to deal with. Otherwise you must resort to centrifuging (which while more work than decanting, has the same advantages), or filtration, which can be aided by using a vacuum.

Filtration is more effective if you want all the particles from the original substance and if the substance are small but decanting is used for big objects that can be picked up by the hand

Decantation is no effective as there are particles which float but filtration will remove those particles so i feel filtration is more effective.

If your filter is effective enough then filtration is better. However, If the solids are unwanted but will clog your filter centrifuging and decanting is an attractive alternative.

decant is quick and easy unless you have fine particles that won't stay behind. then filtration is easier
