all prime time cartoons were built on the shoulders of the flintstones (the first prime time cartoon)
the simpsons took that legacy, and spawned a new era of prime time cartoons. few can follow in those footsteps.
however, from my perspective, the simpsons will always be the #1 "prime time" cartoon. all others are distant seconds.

The Simpsons has a long-standing reputation. I think it's a solid show. They've had some weak moments, but they've been on the air for eons, and overall, there's some brilliant writing.
Family Guy is.. just.. different. There's some incredibly good writing on it too, but some of it is just off the wall.
For me, they're different sorts of shows, even if both are animated, but if I had to choose, it'd be Simpsons.

I absolutely love Family Guy. I never watched it before its 3 year hiatus, but now that its back I can't get enough of it. I'm even trying to track down all of the original episodes because people say those are better than the new ones.
I used to love the Simpsons, but it is definitely time for them to call it quits. The show used to be witty and original, but now there are entire story lines that are wrapped around a couple of not-very-funny one-liners. It's very sad.

Simpsons no doubt! However, I must admit I have recently just started watching reruns of "South Park", and I find myself more enthused to watch that than my favorite show the Simpsons. Really, all I ever watch on TV is the Simpsons, and South Park, nothing else.

Family Guy wins over the Simpsons. Peter beats Homer. Lois beats Marge. Chris is way funnier then Bart. Everybody slamming on Meg is funnier then Lisa. Stewie is way funnier then any other cartoon character. Brian is an added bonus.

Family Guy is the funniest when you see an episode for the first time, then gets predictable, the simpsons however can be watched over and over and still be hilarious

Hands down.....Family Guy is soooo much better than the Simpsons. Not that I don't like the simpson's, but if they were on at the same time and i had to choose......FAMILY GUY!!!!

I rank both as #1 on my list as the most stupid / sick / discusting / no moral taste / lack of intelligence / worthless / dumb / unintelligent / impaired and any other word used by the human race to described the above. Just my thoughts.....
