I have heard it variously explained that a) they snort coke b) clean their ears or c) use it as a microscrewdriver.
Any further suggestions - it seems very weird from this ex-pat's point of view.

Actually...I've known a few Taxi Drivers in the Past...and each one has their own method for Self-Defense!
Some hold a Screwdriver, Pen, or some other Pointed Object in one hand as they drive...The idea being to strike the eye of an assailant if she/he is attacked.
I think the long fingernail is a "natural" defense weapon...one that's not noticed by the average traveller...and, there's no risk of dropping a weapon...The driver can aim directly for a robber's eye(s)...Pretty Good idea actually - It's legal - And could be Life-Saving!

I have noticed a lot of Greek men have the same thing. My mum told me it's because they use the long nail to pick their nose with. Not sure if it's true but I did see one old guy doing just that! Kind of gross but I suppose it's better than them shoving their whole finger up there!

I asked a taxi driver this in Malaysia and he said that it is superstition - they believe in balance in all things and therefore grow their little finger nail long so that the finger appears the same length as the rest of the fingers.

Its some kind of 'trend' among the Chinese men.
To make them look gangsterish
And i doubt they snort coke.

I have very long little fingernails compared to the rest of them and for me its a practical reason, they are more difficult to cut and/or file than the rest, plus if you have big enough gaps between your teeth they're quite useful as a toothpick!

haha! i ask myself from time to time that. i was there while ago and i see lots of weird staff about chinese especially taxi driver but over all they all strange anyways. but i would say they use that crazy long fingernail is to pick from their nose haha! sorry to say this but i dnt think there is no other reasone for it. carfull when u shake hand

It goes back to times when rich gentlemen had servants to do everything for them. It was a sign to show you never used your hands for actual work therefore being able to grow one's nail very long. It is impossible to do much of anything practical with long nails so it became a status symbol.
The wealthier and lazier you were the more long nails you had and the longer they grew. I hate to think who wiped their ***.....

iv actually asked a guy with a long little finger nail, he and his mates had it they did indeed say it was a fashion thing! but i agree its gross!!!
