I am not asking this to offend anyone, if it does please forgive me. It is something I've wondered for a long time. Very often I will see a gay couple. The one will be manly and the other feminine. This counts for male and female couples. If you're a man who likes men then why would a man who acts like a female turn your on? If you are a woman who likes woman why would a manly woman turn you on? I know it doesn't always work like that but it seems to be pretty common. What gives?

Thanks to all those who answered, it definitely clarified the matter for me. To hmmmm? I was insulted when I read your comment at first but then there always has to be one.

It all goes back to preferences. The same reason someone would prefere chocolate to vanilla, or country music compared to rock. It is their tastes. It is what gets their attention. Where a fem. guy may be similar to a woman in his actions and style, he most certainly is not a woman. The gay guys who are attracted to this sort of person are for a reason. That is their preference.
At the same time there is also the possibility that it isn't the look of the person, but the actual person themselves that attracts them. For example, I always assumed I was more attracted to fem girls (me being androgynous to slightly butch on the scale). Turns out the woman I fell in love with is the same as me.
I have met several gay couples who are butch/femme, femme/femme, and butch/butch. It just seems to get peoples attention more when they have opposite characteristics.

Simply because people are people. If a gay man likes feminine men, then that's what he likes...fem MEN. They still have the body of a man. If a lesbian like a butch women, she likes a butch WOMAN. Still a woman underneath. What makes you think it is the femininity or masculinity that attracts other people to them? That's just part of who the person is.
I am a "butch" woman. I find it distressing when people make assumptions about who i am behind closed doors. Just because I like mens clothes and have a men's haircut... that doesn;t mean I am like a man. On top of the hair and clothes, my voice is deep, my features are masculine...I did not make it that way, it just IS. BUT, I don;t act like a man, sure i goof off and play around that way. But I don;t act like a "man", as in activities generally associated with men...I don't like sprts. I don't sit around and talk about tools, cars, fights, etc etc. I prefer reading to TV. I do like video games. I like card games and other games too. I'm also not into typical fem activities either. I am more...androgynous in my personality, but maybe a little masculine.. But my physical appearance is masculine. Most importantly, I do not want to be a man. I do not try to be a man. I do not get up in the morning and say "Hmmm I'm gonna wear this shirt because it makes me look more "manly". I wear what I like, that just happens to be mens clothes. I have nothing against men, but why in the world would I give up multiple orgasms to be able to pee standing up? LOL
Aren't the other things more important than physical appearnace (i.e. masculine-fem)? Most people end up in long term relationsips with someone they have things in common with, not because of how that person dresses or acts in society.

Same reason Hitler thought all children with birth defects such as autism should be slaughtered. RACISM! This is a loaded question, it;s like saying all black men are lazy or all Italians like spaghetti, what an incredible stupid question, full of bigotry and stupidity. You really should be ashamed of yourself for asking such a stupid question, I can understand a 15 year old posing such a ridiculous question but a Mother!
Shame on you....
Despite the ridiculousness of the question, the replies are even more base and reflect on the continuing bigotry and hatred being spewed in this country and the world towards anyone who is different. You should all be ashamed!

Most gays do not go with feminine men. If they do that means they are uncomfortable with their sexuality and trying to substitute for a woman. In some cases a feminine type may actually turn me on.

I don't think it's so much about how they act, as the parts they have. The same could be asked of women who marry effeminate men and men who marry tomboyish girls.
But for the record, I'm a femme and am only attracted to other girls who are too.
