I think it's a question of how the people feel within themselves.
Sure you can bring in genetics, upbringing and so on... But the bottom-line to me is whether you are at peace within yourself. If you are, you will not be bitchy/nasty/spiteful. If you are not at peace, then you will be bitchy/nasty/spiteful, the degree depending on how much of a mess you are in on the inside.
Very often, the way we behave is a reflection of what we feel deep inside.

All what has been said before it's true , we all deal differently with pain , jealousy , sadness , some get over it , others need to make others feel what they feel in order to get some
" satisfaction" . They will get then as the Rolling Stones will say "I get not satisfaction", so is an endless story really
I personally think it's much more rewarding helping people than looking for revenge or or humiliation.

Social learning theory suggests that we mimic the behaviours of others dependant on whether the behaviour is succesful and not punished so someone who has seen spiteful behaviour work eg. a little kid bullies the other kids, they are scared of him and so are really nice to him, if the behaviour is not punished it has been successful in getting a positive response and will be used again and therefore the behaviour is reinforced in the person until otherwise is learnt

Maybe education or your temper, your self esteem, your interests in life ( no need being bitchy one can focus on things more interesting for the inner self for instance), the way you see others...
But I do believe some people really deserve to be trated scornfully because of the way they behave

I believe that the extent to which their mean, bitchy behaviour has been rewarding in the past may be one reason why they continue it. For example if a person is mean throughout school and it wins them friends(though through fear it may be) These people may believe that to continue this behaviour is the way they will win friends. It is the concept of reinforcement. Behaviourist psychologists would explain it in this way.

Some people are just plain nasty, and will never be any other way.
They are usually miserable, and are only balanced by the fact that they have a plank on each shoulder, as opposed to a chip.

A lot of it is inherent personality. The rest is the result of experiences.
I have known people who had really traumatic childhoods and they are still very polite, nice people. And I have also known people who had very easy lives but they are still bitchy, petty, unpleasant, etc.
So it's not all about what someone has been through. It's more about what they have learned from it.
