I don't think Dress Coding hardly matters. Dressing is one's OWNn private choice--giving dress code is like peepin' through his/her key hole. It's really unethical!! If I were a parent, I'll let my Kids choose what they want to wear! After all, in school, we all go to, for studies only!!!

The way a student dresses is also a form of speech. Free speech is protected by the first amendment of the constitution. Any student that can tell you that should be able to dress how they want. However, there are some exceptions to the first amendment that apply to school. Children should have to wear a shirt, pants (skirt or shorts), and shoes. As for length, type, ect... I think the only question that can be asked is this, will what a student wears distract other students from learning or incite a riot? So yes, it matters. It matters that every child in this country should have access to an education regardless of the kind of clothes they can afford. It matters that every child in this country should be able to express themselves and that includes the clothing that they wear. My son will start kindergarten in the fall. The school district we are in is not the best. We considered sending him to a public charter school, but they have a dress code that requires wearing a polo or button down shirt. My son hates these kind of shirts. He'll probably grow out of it, but my thinking is that if he wants to wear a t-shirt or sweatshirt then he should be allowed to.

I think it definitely matters at certain levels. Kindergarten students are going to pay attention to what other kids are wearing, but as they get older, it becomes an issue. Certain types of clothing can definitely attract attention away from education. Junior high and high school girls shouldn't be allowed to wear halter tops and miniskirts, because it will obviously distract the male students. I think anything too revealing is off-limits. No overly-baggy pants for guys. Nothing with racial, gang-related, or overtly sexual themes should be allowed.

As the parent of a daughter, it does matter. We have a dress code in our home.
Collarbone to knees, shoulder to elbows. With a 4 finger allowance.

clean, non-ratty blue or black jeans
slacks
skirts that come below the fingertips when fully extended
no shirts with advertisements
no t-shirts unless they are the button down style such as polo shirts
no revealing clothing

Yes, it does matter. When there is no competition on how a student dresses, they are freer to devote more to school rather than trying to be a model on the fashion runway.
