During the last few years, foreign films have been the top mark when it comes to good movies. They're usually capable of bringing a subtle and different taste to the screen, something that you can't catch in your own country. Here are a few you can try:
Note: These are popular international movies that should be available at any reputable entertainment shop and they all have English subtitles.
1) Amelie - [France] A quirky young woman decides to change the lives of complete strangers for the better while discovering her own interests in life. A simple and feel-good movie for any Sunday afternoon. (Interesting tidbit: Amelie is played by Audrey Tautou, the woman from The Da Vinci Code. It was her breakout hit)
2) Dear Frankie - [Scotland] A single mother struggles to support her mother and her son, Frankie, who is deaf. Frankie has never known the reason why his father left, but he receives letters from his dad every month. Frankie's mom is actually the one sending the letters and it kills her that she has to lie to him everyday to protect him, so one day she decides to look for a man who could pose as Frankie's dad, just for a day. A very endearing story with very real characters.
3) Les Choristes [France] - A washed-out music teacher finds his way to a boarding school for troubled young boys. Everyone is cynical and cruel there, including the headmaster who has given up hope on these boys. The teacher decides to try something new --giving the boys something to look forward to. He begins a choir and the boys begrudgingly start singing only to discover their passions and their dreams along the way. The music of this film is amazing and was nominated for an Oscar in 2004.
If you find that you enjoy these films, feel free to email me, I have more great films that I wouldn't mind sharing. =)
