Sound is simply waves of varying air pressure reaching the ear. The variations in pressure (called sound waves) need to be between 20 & 20000Hz (Hertz - cycles a second) to be audible.

To produce them electronically you need an oscillator to create the correct frequency and a transducer to convert the electronic oscillations (frequency) to sound waves. The transducer is usually a speaker. An oscillator might simply be a guitar string moving over an electronic pickup.
