Mcafee and Norton really aren't all that great. Try downloading Avast! antivirus. It's free for home use, all you have to do is register it. That should catch any viruses you have coming through. Whenever I use limewire and there is a virus threat an Avast screen comes up warning me about it.

Do a clean install of windows XP with atleast SP2. If SP2 not available atleast SP1 shud be made avialable. Also install, a firewall Say ZoneAlarm, Windows XP with sp2 firewall is also good. Also install spybot, malware cleaner. For combating viruses Install any one of the following antivirus programs (all must be updated), Norton. MC-afee, AVG antivirus. Scan ur system for the first time before connectng to the internet. Update all ur antivirus programs after connecting to the internet. Spybot will help u to identify which thing u download which u shudnt. Also make it sure that u exit Limewire after use, crossing the X doesnt mean that u have exited the Lime wire, it is vulnerable to attack. U can also install u port scanner, if u r an advanced user.

Stay away from pop ups offering "free things" don't click on advert type things indiscriminately. Keep out of porn sites, they are loaded with problems. A download accelerator just means they get their quicker, including any "Nasties". Your macfee is fine if current and updated frequently. If your subscription expires, below is a good free antiviral from grisoft. (AVG FREE).
Make sure you get all the spyware products I have suggested they are free and good products.
Antiviral. (free)
AVG free. Excellent protection available from: http://www.Grisoft.com
Don't use two antiviral products together as they may be incompatible. If your Antiviral trial has run out, then remove product from your computer and get the AVG installed.
Anti-spyware (all free)
Essential products are: Adaware SE from: http://www.lavasoft.com
Spybot SD http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
Spywareblaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Windows Defender - from Microsoft downloads.
PC starter kit at download.com 20 of the best recommended programmes for people new or less advanced in computers. Check all three pages, at bottom see Security/Tools/Fun
http://www.download.com/PC-Starter-Kit/2001-12350_4-0.html?tag=dir
C Cleaner.http://www.ccleaner.com/
This will tell you a lot about what is on your computer, such as running programmes, cookies, History, settings etc. and will help you clean up and remove unwanted items. Be careful how you use it as it is a very powerful programme and you should read the help index before you do anything with it.
Hope this information is of help to you and others.

Use LINUX, it is safe and virus free and limewire works fine on it
after downloading whatever files you want you can scan it from linux and if it is ok you can restart to Windows and begin to use them
LINUX will also be very safe when browsing the internet or viewing your mail
To stay in safe I recommend you to use linux for internet applications and use windows for the other applications (mostly games)
if u r interested i can help you to find suitable linux for u and show you how to install it
