Many recent events have brought to the fore the question of how to treat soldiers who are accused of a crime.

Some say we should let it go. Support the troops no matter what and understand that we have asked them to risk their lives, witness things no human being should witness so we should have compassion with those who might crack under the strain.

Some say it's impossible for our troops to act criminally and that any suggestion of criminal activity is simple propaganda from the enemy.

Others say you should prosecute all crimes according to the laws of the US and it's military.

How do you feel about all this?

Yes. We should punish soldiers.
When you fight in the battlefront, you fight for your nation. You represent everyone back home, your family, your friends, and even your pets. Therefore once you are in a hot zone, you must remember that even if you are given the temporary right to kill, you are still a U.S Citizen, and no matter where you go, once you have that uniform on, you are treated no higher, or less than expected of every soldier. Crimes of War must be punished. We do not discipline soldiers to run out there and cause havoc. We train them to fight for a better tomorrow.

Absolutely!!!!! But I'm wondering under which country's rule of law. The USA is prosecuting supposed terroists under our rule of law and , of course, other criminals, so why shouldn't criminally minded military be prosecuted? American civilians are prosecuted and punished on a routine basis all over the world so what makes the military any different? I absolutely support our military and thank them for their service but they cannot use the horrors of war as an excuse to commit ANY crime at all. Well, I just answered my own question.

Prosecute them. If they are that stressed, there are people they can talk to. I'm a proud military wife of a Sgt serving in Iraq right now. Strain is a shoddy excuse for doing horrible things to another person. They deploy chaplains just like they deploy soldiers. That is like saying you should forgive a man downrange for cheating on his spouse. Its crazy. They deserve to be pushished to the full extent that the crime dictates. I'm for taking responsibility for your own actions, not blaming everything and everyone around you.

Leave it to the military and US authorities to determine if a person has committed a crime and what the penalty, if any, should be.

They have doctors to examine individuals to see if they cracked under the stress of war and anything else abnormal. If they determine that the individual was fully aware while committing a crime, I have faith in our system that the issue will be handled correctly.
