I don't know who invented them but I assume they were design to get rid of the VPL (visible pantie line).
I think they are fine but I do like to see that little shadow caressing a womans backside.

I'm not sure who invented them but I own one thong, tried it didn't like wearing it. I love a nice pair of full brief panties to cover my backside, I even have some granny panties in my drawer. And as far as panty lines go, if your looking at my backside then you must like something, so the panty lines will not bother you.

Take this as a joke... It all started with the Tsumo Wrestlers of the Far East (Japan) who were too fat to fit into ordinary underwear. They would wrap cloth around their loins that took the form of modern day g-strings or thongs.
Stemming from that, someone thought it would be a cool idea to have underwear that would not give a lot of problems when you wear it and believe me it does not give you problems.
This is also in addition to the foregoing answers given about getting rid of the panty line that makes you look untidy especially in tight hipsters... It also gives you an opportunity to expose a little boit of flesh when you wear low cut jeans (would not be cool to show off a lot of cloth).

Thongs have been around for a long, long time. They have been worn in pretty much every culture on Earth that I can think of.
What are they for? Well, they are underwear. They can be worn for comfort, to get rid of underwear lines under clothes or just to feel sexy.

So you can't see your panties through your trousers. Like you know when you get a panty line where the elastic is digging into your butt cheeks? Thongs stop that. I love thongs!!

I don't know who invented them, but I'd rather have a half inch of fabric in my crack than have a whole cheek's worth of fabric stuck up there. I think they became popular when pants got tighter...no panty lines.

wearing normal underwear with tight jeans isn't very flattering to the figure. It makes you look like you're wrapped in a cocoon.
