A hard question?
Why do couples suddenly become affectionate when they see other people walking past? It's usually the guy doing this(I'm a guy). Im not that big(6'1 227). Not big enough for the guy to be scared anyway. What's going on?

Also it's mostly college aged white kids that do this. (I'm multiracial;) Are they just sexually immature or or thinking they are lacking something that I'm not or is it something else? I don't stare...they're actions are pretty immediate after one glance.
Do other races do this to white people also?

By the way
I have two children and have a steady girlfriend.

What I really feel is that this has something to do with "Alpha males". When I was younger and I was with my girfriend I would see someone physically stronger than me and I would tend to become slightly more affectionate. I believe that these young men are seeing me as a potential "Alpha" and are generally afraid. Im just curious If anyone else notices this also.

You don't consider yourself large at 6 foot 1 inch 227 pounds, eh. Well my good Sir you must live in the land of the giants. I'm six three and go 215 pounds and I'm keenly aware that my size can intimidate the hell out of people. I make allowance for this and attempt to put folk at ease through non aggressive posture, smile at the good folk; say hey how's it going or such; you must know this too. I find it endearing when couples pull together, what ever the reason and as I live in Canada I've had opportunity to observe this amongst all the different peoples this planet has. Goodness knows they're all here. If you have the chance watch how couples react to a woman walking by them or a man who's height and build are less threatening. It could be an eye opener.

I agree the Alpha Male theory works. If you see a man walk past you feel the need to show your stengths and protect your terroritory. I have noticed all races do this if the couples appear to be happy together. However I have noticed the opposite happens if the couple appear to be fighting. This is the way one tells the other they are unhappy and wants the world to know. I also think some feel the need to show their affection to the other "mate" in public to make their "mate" feel loved more. This way showing they are telling the world they love that person.

like all animals we send out a scent called pheromones, just like the alpha male your talking about. although it is not noticeable to anyone's sense of smell but the effects it had on a males mind will cause them to keep their distance. what releases this is when we feel overly paranoid which happens when other males are around. We may not think we feel paranoid but we do. this makes us react and in doing so releases this pheromone. That's basically all it is.

well, i would have to say its not all couples, because I have never done that, nor seen it. however, maybe since you see this in other people, you also see it in yourself. And because you said that you are aware of you doing it when you were younger, you are going to notice it in others as well... to help you understand what I mean... say you are sitting in a circle w/ people you know.... and you are asked to go around and tell one thing that you like and dislike about each person... and then when you are done... you hold up a mirrow..and say the same thing... because the things that we see in others we see in our selves as well... Once you get passed the feelings around this issue..it wont bother you anymore... its in your head....you are not wrong for it...its just what u have gone thru... its ok.

They want to feel a sense of admiration. As humans, we all want to be acknowledged and the minute we receive it, we want to embrace it as much as possible, I think we feel we need it, with everything in life. When you're in love with someone, and you are both told how cute of a couple you are or feel that people are possibly jealous, you tend to feed off of that acknowledgment whether it's a positive or negative feeling.

Sounds to me like generally insecurity and low ego. They want to show the world they are with someone, probably to make up for the times they were alone.

Yeah I think its a territory thing and an insecurity. I do it sometimes, and I've noticed my girlfriend grab onto me whenever another woman goes past.

I think it is all a form of passive defence such as when a person crosses their arms when speaking to you.
Or when you back up when someone invades your personal space.
This action would signify, HEY! we are together keep walking.

Those guys are probably trying to show you that they have girl freinds, so they are not available and don't want you to try picking them up. If they were alone they would likely flirt with you sailors
