if you wanna see a scary movie then I have to recommend the original black and white 1964 version of The Haunting, also sometimes called The Haunting of Hill House.
It's not gory. It's not schlocky. It's not funny. It doesn't have any really fancy f/x. It's just a terrifying movie.
A lot of other movies owe a debt to it, including The Shining which is the next scariest movie out there after The Haunting.
Don't judge it by the 90's remake that was a total piece of crap.

Either Evil Dead or The Excorcist, both watched when I was way too young.
Evil Dead has aged alot and is now not as scary, but the Excorcist is still very disturbing.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre deserves a mention too & the last scene from The Blair Witch Project lingered in my mind for a bit too.

I think the most recent disturbing film I saw was The Devils Rejects which I thought was suprisingly good.

The scariest would be Exorcist, or Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

The most bizarre would be Tetsuo the Ironman, or Ichi the Killer.

The most disturbing would be Dead Ringers.

the heart is decietful above all things. now this film isn't a horror, thats why its so scary. the hairs on the back of my neck still stand on end when i think of it. the thought of ever having to watch it again brings tears to my eyes. i think its because its you can believe that it could be a true story and some poor person if not a lot of people acctually have lives that bad. worth watchin, just to make you feel better about your own depressing life.

The Thing (the 1982 remake starring Kurt Russell). Excellent, gory (many years pre-CGI) FX, convincing story, and brilliant depictions of paranoia, as trust breaks down between the people.
