I live in Turin, Italy, the former Winter Olympics 2006 host city, near one of the largest European marketplace areas. This suburb has a main part of Arab inhabitants. I guess is near to Marseilles, where Zidane was born. By the way, Zidane played in this city in Juventus FC in years 1996-2000.
I'm disappointed reading some answer. Here every day harsh words are raining. In the streets, market, bus... If every insult would be paid in full in the way some answers are suggesting, this suburb should have population zero since many years ago.
I'm forced to guess those answers come from people too young to know real life, or too proud and self confident to understand how insulting and hurting are slightly different. It could be they are simply joking. I wonder where are they coming from.
Sadly, we are all speaking about a bubble, a racist insult occurred in a football match, without any evidence, proof or source. Easy and mindless way to spread hate and racism all over the web. Dirty job. The web is a great way to create friendship, to allow different people to speak about everything. But freedom has its own rules.
Please, think twice before writing.

I like to think that I'm enough in control of my temper to remember that I'm an adult and I know the truth, therefore I don't have to worry about some idiot's disrespect. But I suppose if I'd been exposed to a lifetime of racial slurs, it might be a bit more difficult to be philosophical about it all. There's never a single factor in a case like the Zidane-Materazzi incident. It's easy enough to say what we'd do, but the truth is that we never really know what we'd do in a given situation until we find ourselves there.

chill man, he didnt say that. Sorry to burst your bubble.
"but further claims emerging from France last night suggested Materazzi had not racially abused Zidane but had insulted his mother who, it is understood, became ill on the morning of the final. There is no suggestion that Materazzi knew this at the time."

Now the real question is, why would somone start that rumor?

It was funny at first but now it's getting really hilarious with ppl making assumptions. The Sun actually got a lip reader.Yeah Right.
I think one of them should come out and tell us the truth, put us out of our misery.

Although racial slurs are no laughing matter,it shouldnt be condoned.Materezzi should be penalized for that then.Severly.

On the other hand I think I'll believe this story that says Zidane offered to exchange shirts with him and he was all like I'll exchange them only if they were on your mother.

Not cool.

To answer the question I think I did kick the living lights out of him.Meaning i did wound him till he got hurt. Not kill him though. He's not worth going to jail for.

It hasn't been proven that that's what he said.. and I doubt that Materazzi would ever say something mean about Zidane's mother because his own mother died when he was 14. Also, Zidane is a professional athlete that has been playing for many years, and I doubt that anyone that replied here is.

You can't kill someone just because he has no education, and his brain is small!
Well first of all Zidane acted like a child. As a great footballer that he is the gesture was a lack of respect(for his team) and lack of fair-play!His fans are trying to find him excuses, let's not forget that IT'S NOT THE FIRST TIME ZIDANE HEADBUT'S A PLAYER!There's no excuse for Materazzi either if he really said that thing, but LET THEM SPEAK FIRST!
Let's not put in shadow Italy's victory!!!
