The discovery of "zero" does not refer to the concept of nothingness. It refers to the representation of notthingness by a symbol. This representation was the biggest scientific revolution because it enabled us to represent not only the presence, but also the absence of an entity. This helped develop the decimal system, negative numbers and was indirectly responsible for a lot of theoretical discoveries in science. The atom could not have been discovered if Zero had not been discovered. How? An Atom is too small to be observed using the naked eye. The atom was discovered therotically long before anyone produced a photograph. This theorm could not have been developed without "zero".

To add to what people have already said here, zero is not a relatively new concept. It was discovered, some say between the 1st and 5th centuries AD. For some additional reading on the developments of the numeral system, refer to http://www.geocities.com/rmlyra/hindi.html

Lay off the hash pipe. Those deep thoughts you are experiencing aren't very deep.

Subtract all the money from your bank account, and tell me if you still have more than $0.

As a form of mathematical notation, the concept of the zero is a relatively recent phenomena, but I'm willing to bet that even before they had notation for it, people who could count were aware of the concept of nothing.
